Tawasil
John Tawasil (Present Confusion)

Ma’ Rosa (Brillante Mendoza, 2016)
Inserted a Mendoza film here and this one was my favorite. Taklub comes in at a close second.

Babae sa Breakwater (Mario O’Hara, 2003)
Pretty much a classic to me.

Mula sa Kung ano ang Noon (Lav Diaz, 2014)
Had to pick one Diaz film. Norte was his entry point for many audience members, while films like Ang Babaeng Humayo and Hele sa Hiwagang Hapis really broke open the flood gates. But I’d have to choose between the film above and Ebolusyon ng Pamilyang Pilipino as my pick.

Dagitab (GianCarlo Abrahan, 2014)
This film really has really grown on me over the years. It has a strange sensibility to it that mixes both European and Asian styles.

Bwakaw (Jun Lana, 2012)
Had to pick a Lana film. Was either this or Barber’s Tales, this proved to have more emotional impact.

Ang Sayaw ng Dalawang Kaliwang Paa (Alvin Yapan, 2011)
Always liked Yapan, and this is my favorite work of his. Probably one of the most interesting love stories we’ve ever made in the last 17 years.

Engkwentro (Pepe Diokno, 2010)
While I’m personally not a fan of his later works, Diokno’s Engkwentro was a film ahead of its time – by looking at contemporary (at the time) news it predicted a reality that would come into fruition almost a decade later.

Badil (Chito Roño, 2015)
Including Roño here because I thought of all the old school directors (Lamangan, Portes, et al) and he was my favorite. Though he did shift Filipino horror style in line with contemporary Asian and Hollywood films with Feng Shui, this is my favorite film of his.

Sana Dati (Jerrold Tarog, 2013)
In an industry that has since embraced hugot from films like That Thing Called Tadhana, here stands Sana Dati, which is pretty much the Anti-Romcom. Everything about it works so well that it still resonates even today.

Harana (Benito Bautista, 2012)
Had to include one documentary here. It was a hard choice between this and Sunday Beauty Queen, but this one really stuck out in terms of cultural significance.

Honorable mentions for doing groundbreaking stuff, being good films in general, or being a representative of regional cinema: Independencia (Raya Martin), Heneral Luna (Tarog), Imbisibol (De Guzman), Honor Thy Father (Matti), Dekada ’70 (Rono), Ang Pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros (Solito/Balintagos), Apocalypse Child (Cornejo/Jimenez), Ang Damgo ni Eleuteria (Zuasola), Women of the Weeping River (Dayoc), Magkakabaung (Laxamana)
